Giordano de Guglielmo, Pharm.D, PhD
Assistant Professor, Psychiatry
University of California San Diego
Dr. Giordano de Guglielmo embarked on his academic journey in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology, earning his PharmD from the University of Camerino, Italy, in 2009.
His early research experience began during his master's thesis project in 2008 at King’s College London, under the mentorship of Professor Gunter Schumann.
Dr. de Guglielmo joined Dr. Roberto Ciccocioppo’s laboratory at the University of Camerino as a graduate student. During this period, he also spent a year at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, in Dr. Friedbert Weiss’s lab. Here, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma, he contributed significantly to the development of an agonist-like compound targeting the NOP receptor, investigating its effects on alcohol-related behaviors.
Dr. de Guglielmo returned to Italy to complete his PhD in 2013, focusing on the role of the PPAR gamma receptor in opioid abuse and tolerance. His postdoctoral journey continued in the United States, where from 2014 to 2019, he was part of Dr. Olivier George’s lab at The Scripps Research Institute. His research during this time centered on identifying and characterizing neuronal ensembles linked to alcohol withdrawal in rats.
Currently, Dr. de Guglielmo serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and faculty member of the Neurosciences Graduate Program at the University of California, San Diego.
His research program is dedicated to unraveling the neural circuits of addiction. He focuses on elucidating the critical molecular and cellular mechanisms that underpin the adverse behavioral outcomes associated with substance abuse and dependence, striving to translate these findings into therapeutic strategies for addiction.
